Civil Mediation at Knox County General Sessions Court
The Tennessee Valley Mediation Association will present an in-depth discussion of Civil Mediation at Knox County General Sessions Court, led by Bob Swan, Knox County General Sessions Court Mediation program director, and Jackie Kittrrell, attorney and Executive Director of the Knox County Community Mediation Center. The presenters will discuss the operation of Knox County’s court sponsored mediation program. Knox County has offered civil mediation at Sessions Court for pro se cases since 1993. Hundreds of individuals have been assisted in dispute resolution. Hundreds of hours of time for the courts have been saved. Many mediators have had opportunities to gain experience and learn the craft of civil mediation. The presenters of this program will discuss in depth the following topics as they relate to civil mediation in general sessions court: How is mediation in civil court for pro se cases different from what you might have learned in Rule 31 training or law school: What can you learn in Sessions court mediation that will be of use in other types of mediation? Who are the clients served? How can a mediator best serve these relatively “simple” cases? How can civil court mediation benefit both mediators and the community at large?
