Biography of the Clerk

Mike Catalano was appointed by the Tennessee Supreme Court to be the Appellate Court Clerk for a six-year term effective January 1, 2004. He was reappointed to a second six-year term in January 2010. As Appellate Court Clerk, Catalano oversees three offices and staff totaling 30 employees in Nashville, Knoxville and Jackson, where the Supreme Court, Court of Appeals and Court of Criminal Appeals hear cases. The Clerk’s office handles dockets, appellate court filings and administrative matters.

Mr. Catalano graduated from Memphis State University in 1976 Summa Cum Laude with a B.A. in political science. He attended the University of Tennessee College of Law and graduated in 1978. He worked as a staff attorney for the executive secretary of the Tennessee Supreme Court from 1979-1980. Prior to his appointment as the Appellate Court Clerk, Mr. Catalano served in a variety of positions in the State Attorney General’s office from 1980 to 2004. In his tenure at the State Attorney General’s office, Mr. Catalano litigated numerous cases on behalf of the state in both state and federal courts at the trial and appellate levels.

Mr. Catalano is a member of the Nashville Bar Association. He is also a member of the National Conference of Appellate Court Clerks and a Fellow of the Nashville Bar Foundation. He and his wife, Janet, have two young daughters, Katherine and Rebecca. He is an avid  runner and casual golfer.
